.

Objetives:

The potential for microalgae applications to improve the quality of life is very high in the areas of energy, treatment of liquid and gaseous effluents, promotion of well-being and health, and animal and human nutrition. The objective of the course is to provide basic knowledge and the necessary skills, as well as analytical and instrumental procedures for the design, operation and control of photobioreactors for the growth of microalgae and harvesting and processing biomass. The main objective is to explain clearly and simply:

  1. The knowledge and skills necessary to grow microalgae and cyanobacteria.
  2. Fundamentals to design, configure, operate and control photobioreactors (PBR).
  3. The essentials of fluid dynamics and mass transfer within PBRs.
  4.  Units of main operations to harvest biomass.

Evaluation

  • 40% final written exam on the content taught in theory and practical classes.
  • 40% corresponding to reports on laboratory practices and the visit to be carried out.
  • 20% attendance and active participation in theory and practical classes.

.

Objetives:

Microalgae biotechnology has gained considerable importance in recent decades. Microalgae biomass can be used in many markets. Applications range from the production of simple biomass for animal and human food, biofuels, bioproducts, and ecological activity molecules. With the research of sophisticated cultivation and strain-finding techniques, microalgae biotechnology can now meet the high demands of the food and pharmaceutical industries. Several companies have recently developed numerous innovative systems to obtain microalgal products for the production and subsequent treatment of biomass. The products are so varied that they range from active biomolecules with therapeutic capacity for the development of new medicines, food and functional ingredients, products for the dermocosmetic industry, aquaculture, animal feed, biofertilizers, and biostimulants to low-value products such as chemical products. bulk biofuels.

The objective of the course is to provide the basic knowledge, the necessary skills, as well as the analytical and instrumental procedures to process biomass and design the process to obtain products of high, medium, and low added value. The main objective is to explain clearly and simply:

  1. The different commercial applications of microalgae from high-value-added products to low value products.
  2. Comprehensive biomass valorisation and the biorefinery concept.
  3. Economic evaluation of bioprocesses.
  4. Analysis of the life cycle of bioprocesses.

Evaluation

  • 40% Final written exam on the content taught in the theory and practical classes.
  • 40% corresponding to reports on laboratory practices.
  • 20% attendance and active participation in theory and practical classes.
