Ph.D. Seminar

Burton R. Pollin Ph.D. Seminar

The Edgar Allan Poe Spanish Association (EAPSA) invites graduate students engaged in their doctoral research to participate in the Burton R. Pollin Ph. D Seminar to be held at the 2nd International Conference of the Edgar Allan Poe Spanish Association between February 5th-7th, 2020.

The Burton R. Pollin Ph.D. Seminar aims to provide a space for Ph.D. students to present and discuss their current research in dialogue with other doctoral students. Students who would like to participate in the seminar will be required to produce a presentation dealing with issues addressed or hypotheses tested in their dissertations, to focus on the results so far obtained and, above all, to provide a thorough explanation of the methodology applied, with the purpose of gaining specific feedback from their peers and established scholars in the field. Each student’s presentation will last ten minutes, followed by additional time for discussion. Topics should address Edgar Allan Poe’s life and work, his enormous influence on other writers and artists, his times, and also his relationship with other writers of American Romanticism.

Depending on the number of students, the seminar will be organized in separate workshops and will be chaired by a scholar nominated by the Organizing Committee. Presentations at the Burton R. Pollin Seminar will not exclude students’ paper presentations or their participation at the Conference round tables. Doctoral students who participate only in the Burton R. Pollin Seminar may attend all sessions at the EAPSA Conference at a special reduced fee.

Proposals should be sent electronically to the Organizing Committee no later than September 30th, 2019. Proposals must include the name of the doctoral student and the Ph.D. program he/she is enrolled. Prior to their presentation of their research at the Ph.D. Seminar, students will be required to include a letter signed by the student’s Ph.D. advisor who will also provide the (working) title of the dissertation, thus confirming that the student is working under his/her supervision and that he/she has completed at least his/her first year of doctoral studies. Proposals should also include a summary of the project—of no more than five hundred (500) words— indicating:

  • The main topics and issues, including the thesis proposed/hypothesis stated.
  • Methodology (theoretical tools and standpoints).
  • Where relevant, the corpus under consideration.
  • Relevant results so far obtained.
